Abstract

Dr. Ignacio Ponseti stands as a monumental figure in pediatric orthopedics, celebrated for transforming the management of congenital clubfoot. Before his contributions, treatment typically relied on extensive surgical procedures that often resulted in stiffness, pain, and long-term disability. Ponseti, through meticulous study of infant foot anatomy and biomechanics, recognized that a gentle and systematic approach could achieve dramatically better outcomes. His method, now known worldwide as the Ponseti Method, uses carefully timed manipulations, sequential casting, and a minimally invasive tenotomy to correct deformities with remarkable precision. The approach is not only highly effective but also far less traumatic for children and significantly more accessible for families. With success rates consistently exceeding 90%, the method has replaced surgery as the global gold standard. Beyond the technique itself, Ponseti’s dedication to teaching and expanding access ensured that millions of children across continents could receive proper treatment. His legacy continues to inspire orthopedic practitioners, representing a profound example of how careful observation and compassion can reshape modern medicine. This impact remains globally enduring. Key Messages: The Ponseti Method has become the global gold standard for congenital clubfoot management, offering a minimally invasive and highly successful alternative to extensive surgical correction.
