Abstract

Theodor Escherich was a German-Austrian pediatrician and bacteriologist best known for discovering Escherichia coli, the most extensively studied bacterium in microbiology. Born in Ansbach, Germany, he pursued medicine in Munich and Würzburg and later specialized in pediatrics. During his research on infant gut flora, he isolated a Gram-negative bacillus from the feces of healthy infants and named it Bacterium coli commune later renamed Escherichia coli in his honor. His work established the concept that the intestinal flora plays a crucial role in digestion, immunity, and disease. Escherich was a pioneer in neonatal hygiene and advocated strongly for breastfeeding, infant nutrition, and public health practices. He introduced systematic bacteriological methods into pediatrics, helping reduce infant mortality from gastrointestinal infections. As a professor at the University of Vienna, he founded the Vienna School of Pediatrics, inspiring generations of pediatricians. His contributions laid the groundwork for modern microbiome research, enteric bacteriology, and clinical pediatrics. Today, E. coli remains a central organism in genetics, biotechnology, and medicine, reflecting Escherich’s lasting scientific legacy.
