Abstract

Thomas Willis (1621–1675), a pioneering English physician and neuroanatomist, made foundational contributions to early pediatric medicine at a time when pediatrics had yet to emerge as a distinct discipline. Through detailed clinical observations and innovative pathological correlations, Willis was among the first to distinguish neurological diseases in children from those in adults, offering early descriptions of infantile convulsions, developmental delays, and behavioral disorders. His work in De Anima Brutorum included one of the earliest accounts of diabetes mellitus in children, recognizing its characteristic sweetness of urine and severe clinical course. Willis emphasized that childhood diseases often presented with unique physiological and symptomatic patterns, challenging prevailing assumptions that children were merely “small adults.” His methodological approaches accurate case documentation, post-mortem studies, and empirical reasoning contributed to a more scientific understanding of childhood illness. Collectively, these insights positioned Thomas Willis as an influential forerunner in pediatric neurology and pediatric medicine more broadly
