Dr. Vinod K. Bhutani, an internationally recognized neonatologist and faculty leader at Stanford University, has made transformative contributions that reshaped the global understanding and management of neonatal jaundice. His development of the Bhutani Nomogram, the first hour-specific bilirubin risk prediction tool, provided clinicians with a scientifically robust method to stratify newborns according to their likelihood of developing severe hyperbilirubinemia. This innovation replaced long-standing reliance on subjective clinical judgement, especially visual assessment of jaundice, which was often inaccurate and influenced by skin pigmentation, lighting conditions, and clinical experience. Building on this foundation, Dr. Bhutani championed universal predischarge bilirubin screening, now incorporated into national and international guidelines as a standard of care. He further advanced the field by pioneering and validating noninvasive transcutaneous bilirubin measurement technologies, making screening safer, faster, and more accessible in both advanced and resource-limited healthcare settings. Through systematic, population-based research, global collaborations, and leadership in kernicterus prevention initiatives, his work has significantly reduced the worldwide incidence of bilirubin-induced neurologic dysfunction (BIND). Dr. Bhutani’s legacy represents a landmark in pediatric medicine demonstrating how data-driven research, standardization of care, and global implementation can prevent lifelong disability and improve outcomes for millions of newborns. Key Messages • Dr. Bhutani transformed neonatal jaundice care from inconsistent, subjective evaluation to evidence-based, universal risk assessment using quantitative bilirubin measurements. • The Bhutani Nomogram and universal predischarge screening have prevented countless cases of kernicterus by supporting early detection and timely followup. • Similar to Sir George Frederic Still’s revolutionary contributions to pediatrics, Dr. Bhutani’s work established neonatal jaundice management as a structured, scientific, and child-centered discipline.
