Abstract

Frederick Batten (1865–1918) was a pioneering English neurologist and pediatrician, often called the father of pediatric neurology. Best known for describing Batten disease (juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis), he made major contributions to understanding childhood nervous system disorder. Batten served as physician and pathologist at leading London hospitals, publishing over 100 papers, and co-authored a notable textbook on childhood diseases. His research clarified rare inherited conditions as well as subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord and dystrophia myotonica, greatly influencing pediatric neurology practice. His broad impact included innovative treatments such as light celluloid splints for infantile paralysis and co-authoring the influential textbook “Diseases of Children” in 1913. Batten was known for his scientific approach, compassion for child patients, and devotion to clinical excellence, leaving a lasting legacy in neurology before his untimely death at the age of 52. Key Messages: Frederick Batten was a pioneering English neurologist and pediatrician who laid the foundations of pediatric neurology through his research on childhood nervous system disorders, especially Batten disease. His scientific contributions, compassionate care, and innovative treatments significantly advanced the understanding and practice of child neurolog.
