Conrad Hal Waddington was a pioneering developmental biologist whose conceptualisation of epigenetics significantly advanced understanding of gene– environment interactions during early development. His work has particular relevance to Pediatrics, where early-life exposures are now recognised as major determinants of long-term health outcomes. This review evaluates Waddington’s scientific legacy by examining his theoretical frameworks, experimental work and contributions to developmental biology. Waddington introduced the term “epigenetics” to describe the mechanisms through which genes give rise to phenotypic traits, and he developed the epigenetic landscape model to illustrate how developmental pathways are shaped by both hereditary and environmental influences. His experiments on fruit flies and chick embryos demonstrated that environmental stressors can induce heritable developmental changes, providing early support for the concept of developmental plasticity. Waddington’s interdisciplinary approach, bringing together genetics, embryology and systems theory, continues to inform contemporary research in neurodevelopment, behavioural Pediatrics, early-life nutrition and the developmental origins of health and disease. Overall, his framework underscores the importance of integrating biological and environmental perspectives to understand how early exposures shape child development and long-term health trajectories.
