Abstract

Barbara McClintock was a pioneering geneticist whose discoveries fundamentally reshaped the understanding of heredity and genome regulation. Her work on maize cytogenetics led to the groundbreaking discovery of transposable elements, demonstrating that genes are capable of moving within and between chromosomes. This insight revealed that the genome is dynamic rather than fixed, introducing new perspectives on gene expression, developmental regulation, and genomic instability. Although McClintock did not directly work in Pediatrics, her findings form the basis of modern interpretations of congenital anomalies, chromosomal rearrangements, and single-gene disorders affecting children. Her scientific career was marked by significant challenges, including gender bias and delayed recognition, yet she maintained remarkable intellectual independence. Her contributions were eventually honoured with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in nineteen eighty-three. McClintock’s legacy continues to influence developmental biology, clinical genetics, and Pediatric diagnostics, highlighting the enduring relevance of curiosity, perseverance, and scientific integrity. Key Message:Barbara McClintock’s discovery of transposable elements transformed the understanding of genome behaviour and laid essential foundations for modern developmental and Pediatric genetics. Her work demonstrates how curiosity, resilience, and scientific independence can drive breakthroughs that continue to influence clinical practice and genetic research.
