Abstract

A comparative study on the hematological parameters of neonatal Hariana and Sahiwal calves was conducted at the Livestock Farm Complex (LFC) of DUVASU, Mathura. The study aimed to evaluate breed-specific variations in hematological parameters between neonatal Hariana and Sahiwal calves. The objectives were to analyze parameters such as Total Leukocyte Count (TLC), Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), Packed Cell Volume (PCV), lymphocytes, neutrophils, and hemoglobin (Hb) levels and to determine any significant differences in Total Erythrocyte Count (TEC) and platelet counts between the two breeds. The study involved seven newborn calves of each breed, selected post-colostrum feeding phase, maintained under uniform feeding and management practices. Approximately 2 ml of blood was drawn in EDTA tubes at fortnightly intervals for three months and analyzed using the Nihon Kohden MEK-6550K Celltac Alpha VET hematology analyzer. The results showed that TLC, MCV, PCV, lymphocytes, neutrophils, and Hb levels did not significantly differ between the two breeds. However, TEC and platelet counts were significantly higher (P<0.01) in Hariana calves compared to Sahiwal calves. The findings suggested that age has minimal influence on hematological parameters in calves up to three months of age before weaning. This study highlighted breed-specific variations in TEC and platelet counts, emphasizing the physiological differences between Hariana and Sahiwal calves.
