Abstract

Maria Delivoria-Papadopoulos made landmark contributions to neonatal medicine that significantly advanced pediatric care, particularly in the areas of neonatal respiratory physiology, cerebral hemodynamics, and hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. Her work provided a strong scientific foundation for modern neonatal intensive care practices and has had a lasting impact on the survival and long-term neurological outcomes of preterm and critically ill newborns. One of her most influential contributions was in elucidating the pathophysiology of hypoxia and ischemia in the developing neonatal brain. Through extensive experimental and clinical research, she demonstrated how impaired oxygen delivery alters cerebral energy metabolism, cerebral blood flow regulation, and neuronal integrity in neonates. Her studies clarified the vulnerability of the immature brain to hypoxic injury and highlighted developmental differences in cerebral responses compared to adults. These findings were crucial in shaping current concepts of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and guiding neuroprotective strategies in neonatal care. Delivoria-Papadopoulos also made pioneering advances in neonatal respiratory physiology. Her research explored the transitional changes in pulmonary circulation and oxygen transport at birth, particularly in premature infants. She investigated the effects of hypoxia and hyperoxia on neonatal lungs and cerebral circulation, contributing to safer oxygen administration protocols and improved ventilatory management in neonatal intensive care units. Her work helped clinicians understand the delicate balance between adequate oxygenation and oxygen-induced injury in neonates. A defining feature of her career was the successful integration of basic science research with clinical neonatology. By translating laboratory findings into clinical applications, she strengthened evidence-based practices in neonatal medicine. Beyond her research, she was an influential educator, mentor, and academic leader who trained numerous pediatricians and neonatologists. Her commitment to scientific rigor, ethical research, and interdisciplinary collaboration significantly shaped academic pediatrics.
