Abstract
The 20th century was a transformative period for women's rights in India, marked by significant legislative advancements and persistent societal challenges. Despite facing exploitation and cruelty, women benefited from various laws enacted to improve their status, including the Indian Constitution's special provisions. The Constitution prohibited discrimination based on sex and ensured equal opportunities in public employment, while subsequent amendments reserved seats for women in local government institutions and parliament. This paper examines the evolution of women's rights in India, highlighting key legislative milestones, judicial decisions, and ongoing struggles for gender equality.
