Abstract
Dr Omprakash Ghai, widely recognised as a pioneer of modern paediatrics in India, significantly transformed child healthcare through his clinical, academic, and community-oriented contributions. This paper outlines his educational background, global training, and subsequent impact on paediatric development upon returning to India. His major achievements include authoring Essential Paediatrics, establishing standardised clinical protocols, advancing immunisation and nutrition programmes, and promoting breastfeeding and neonatal care. Despite substantial challenges such as limited infrastructure and inadequate recognition of paediatrics as a, specialised discipline, his persistent efforts led to the creation of dedicated paediatric departments and improved training systems across the country. This report reflects on his legacy and highlights lessons in leadership, resilience, and purposeful scientific practice. Dr Ghai’s work continues to influence medical education, clinical practice,and public health policies, serving as an enduring model for future healthcare professionals.
