Abstract
Dr. Jayashree Mondkar played a landmark role in establishing Asia’s first human milk bank at Sion Hospital, Mumbai, in 1989. Her initiative provided a safe, structured system for donor milk collection, pasteurization, and distribution to preterm and sick newborns. This innovation significantly reduced neonatal infections, feeding complications, and mortality in vulnerable infants. Dr. Mondkar’s model became the foundation for human milk banking across India and Asia, inspiring the creation of numerous milk banks and strengthening national breastfeeding and neonatal care programs. Her pioneering work transformed newborn survival and set global standards for donor human milk services.
