Abstract

Introduction: Total knee arthroplasty is associated with moderate to severe pain and effective analgesia is essential to facilitate post operative recovery. This non randomised case series examined the analgesic effect of adductor canal block as a central tool in an integrated multi modal analgesia. Material and Methods: We used adductor block to manage postoperative pain in 43 patients presenting to our service for unilateral primary total knee arthroplasty. We recorded pain scores, opioid usage and any adverse side effect. Result: Pain control was generally satisfactory. Very few patients required fentanyl infusion as a rescue analgesia. Vomiting was reported but other side effects such as hypotension, itching, fall etc were unremarkable. Conclusion: Adductor block was practical, safe and effective method of analgesia for pain relief in patients who have undergone unilateral total knee replacement.
