Abstract
Surgical Site Infections (SSIs) remain one of the most prevalent and burdensome healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), contributing significantly to patient morbidity, mortality, and escalating healthcare expenditures. Perioperative and post-anesthesia care nurses occupy a critical frontline position in disrupting the chain of infection across the surgical trajectory. This paper explores the multidimensional role of the nurse in preventing SSIs, examining evidence-based interventions spanning the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases. Key areas of focus include patient optimization, adherence to aseptic technique, antimicrobial stewardship, environmental hygiene, temperature and glycemic control, and postoperative wound surveillance. Furthermore, this paper analyzes systemic barriers to infection control and highlights the leadership role of advanced practice nurses in fostering a culture of safety.
