Abstract

Dr. Vinod K. Paul, a distinguished Indian pediatrician, neonatologist, and public health leader, has played a transformative role in improving maternal and child health in India. This article reviews his extensive clinical, academic, and policy contributions spanning over four decades. From his early years at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Dr. Paul contributed substantially to strengthening neonatal care systems across the country. He supported largescale initiatives in neonatal resuscitation, encouraged the widespread adoption of Kangaroo Mother Care for small and preterm infants, and guided the Delhi Neonatal Infection Study (DeNIS), a landmark project that generated crucial evidence on neonatal infections and antimicrobial resistance patterns in Indian hospitals. His academic legacy includes co-editing Ghai’s Essential Pediatrics, mentoring generations of pediatricians, and promoting evidence-based neonatal care protocols that have been widely adopted across diverse healthcare settings. He has also contributed significantly to capacity building through training programs, policy advisories, and national guidelines aimed at improving neonatal survival and quality of care. Beyond academia, his leadership in national health governance has been equally impactful. As Member (Health & Nutrition) at NITI Aayog, he played a central role in shaping flagship initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat, POSHAN Abhiyaan, and India’s COVID-19 vaccination strategy. His work reflects a rare integration of clinical excellence, research innovation, and policy leadership. Dr. Paul’s career exemplifies how sustained commitment, ethical leadership, and system-level thinking can strengthen public health institutions and significantly improve maternal and child health outcomes nationwide.
