Abstract
This article explores the life and contributions of Melanie Klein, a pioneering figure in child psychoanalysis whose innovative methods reshaped the understanding of early emotional development. Beginning with an overview of her personal background and formative experiences, the paper highlights how Klein’s unconventional path into psychoanalysis and her role as a mother informed her clinical insights. Central to her scientific legacy is the development of play therapy as a tool for accessing children’s unconscious thoughts, along with her influential theories of the paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions and the concept of internal objects. The article also examines the professional challenges Klein faced, particularly the theoretical disputes with Anna Freud that culminated in the “Controversial Discussions” within the British Psychoanalytical Society. Despite criticism, Klein’s persistence and theoretical innovations profoundly shaped modern developmental psychology, object relations theory, and therapeutic approaches to child mental health.
