Dr. Bronson Crothers (1884–1959) was a pioneering American pediatric neurologist whose work laid the foundation for modern pediatric neurology and developmental medicine. At a time when neurological disorders in children were poorly understood and often neglected, Crothers emphasized systematic clinical observation, long-term developmental follow-up, and early diagnosis of neurological impairment. His landmark contributions to the understanding of cerebral palsy clarified its etiological relationship with birth trauma, prematurity, neonatal asphyxia, and early brain injury. Through his academic work at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, he helped establish pediatric neurology as a distinct subspecialty separate from adult neurology. Crothers also advocated for interdisciplinary rehabilitation involving physicians, physiotherapists, educators, and families, thereby promoting holistic care for neurologically impaired children. His humanistic approach challenged prevailing social stigma and emphasized dignity, education, and long-term support. This review highlights Dr. Crothers’ life, scientific achievements, clinical philosophy, and enduring influence on pediatric neurology, cerebral palsy research, and early intervention programs. Key Message: Dr. Crothers revolutionized pediatric neurology by introducing systematic observation, long-term developmental follow-up, and compassionate care for children with neurological impairments. His work laid the foundation for modern cerebral palsy research and early intervention programs.
