Abstract

Anne McLaren (1927–2007) was a pioneering British developmental biologist whose work laid the scientific foundations for modern reproductive biology and assisted reproductive technologies. Her research on mouse embryology clarified key mechanisms of early development, implantation, and embryo culture, leading to major advances in in vitro fertilization (IVF) and stem cell biology. McLaren’s collaborative work with John Biggers in 1958 demonstrated, for the first time, that mammalian embryos could be developed in vitro and result in live births after transfer an achievement that transformed reproductive science. Throughout her career, she contributed extensively to understanding germ cell development, genetic influences on embryogenesis, and the ethical implications of reproductive technologies. McLaren also played an influential role in policy, serving on the Warnock Committee, which shaped UK legislation on embryo research. Her scientific achievements and ethical leadership firmly establish her as one of the most important figures in modern developmental and reproductive biology.
