Abstract

Mobile is poised to play a significant role in healthcare... In contrast to healthcare access, mobile access is becoming almost ubiquitous worldwide. Almost all developed markets already have mobile penetration greater than 100%. Mobile penetrations in Africa, Asia­ Pacific and Latin America are also expected to increase to 82%, 98% and 119% respectively in  2014. Also, the increasing penetration of smartphones as well as the  3G and  4G networks will provide a significant boost to the use of the mobile platform for providing healthcare services.

Thus, the feasibility of mobile devices supporting healthcare is greater than ever before. Mobile health ­ the use of mobile communication and devices for providing healthcare  services or achieving health outcomes ­ stands at a significant inflection point. In India we have 900 million mobile phone users. Almost every family has one mobile set and hence tremendous potential to reach out in the remote area. The people are fairly well conversant with the use of mobile phone for call and messaging. The smart phone too is becoming popular. The IT enabled health related Mother and Child tracking system (MCTS) is one such example. The government is keen to expand these initiatives into other areas of health care delivery. With the phenomenal growth of mobile network and mobile users the opportunities for its application in engaging the families in managing Non­ Communicable diseases is immense.
