Dr. Mary Ellen Avery was a pioneering American pediatrician whose landmark dis covery trans formed neonatal medicine. In the 1950s, she identified surfactant deficiency as the fundamental cause of respiratory dis trees s syndrome (RDS) in premature infants. This breakthrough not only clarified the pathophysiology of a major neonatal killer but also laid the foundation for the development of surfactant replacement therapy, a treatment that has saved hundreds of thousands of newborn lives worldwide. Her early influences included mentors hip from Dr. Emily Bacon, which s haped her pursuit of pediatrics and research. After excelling academically at Wheaton College and Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Avery advanced her scientific career through rigorous work at Harvard Medical School. She later became the firs t woman to chair a major department at Harvard and the firs t woman physician-in-chief at Boston Children’s Hospital.
