Abstract

Thomas Hunt Morgan (1866–1945), an American geneticist and Nobel laureate, revolutionized modern genetics through his pioneering research on Drosophila melanogaster. His discovery of sex-linked inheritance and experimental proof that genes reside on chromosomes fundamentally transformed the understanding of heredity. Working with his students in the famous “Fly Room” at Columbia University, Morgan established core genetic principles such as linkage, crossing over, recombination, and chromosome mapping. His key experiments including the white-eyed fruit fly study provided the first clear evidence supporting the chromosomal theory of inheritance. Although Morgan did not directly contribute to child care or Pediatric development, his work laid the foundation for genetic counselling, diagnosis of hereditary disorders, and understanding congenital anomalies. Despite skepticism from early 20th-century scientists, Morgan’s dedication to rigorous experimentation and critical thinking helped him overcome challenges and shape modern biology. His legacy highlights the value of persistence, empirical research, and scientific collaboration. Key Messages: Thomas Hunt Morgan’s work with Drosophila proved that genes lie on chromosomes, establishing key genetic principles and laying the foundation for modern genetics, genetic counselling, and understanding hereditary disorders.
