Theodor Escherich (1857—1911) was a pioneering pediatrician and bacteriologist whose work laid the scientific foundation for modern pediatric infectious disease research. He is best known for discovering Escherichia coli, a key component of the infant gut microbiome and one of the most widely studied organisms in medicine and biotechnology. Escherich was among the first to systematically investigate intestinal flora in newborns, highlighting the protective effects of breastfeeding and the role of gut bacteria in preventing diarrheal diseases, a major cause of infant mortality in his era. His introduction of bacteriological techniques into pediatric practice helped establish laboratory-based diagnosis and hygiene principles in children’s hospitals. Despite limited microbiological tools and initial resistance from the medical community, Escherich advanced pediatrics into a research-driven discipline and strengthened the link between clinical care and laboratory science. His legacy continues to influence microbiology, infectious disease management, and preventive pediatrics.
