Dr. Hattie Elizabeth Alexander was a pioneering pediatrician, microbiologist, and physician–scientist whose work fundamentally transformed the management of pediatric infectious diseases in the twentieth century. At a time when bacterial meningitis particularly that caused by Haemophilus influenza type b (Hib) was almost uniformly fatal in children, Alexander introduced innovative therapeutic strategies that dramatically reduced mortality and morbidity. Working during the pre-antibiotic and early antibiotic eras, she developed effective antiserum therapy for Hib meningitis, laying the groundwork for modern antimicrobial treatment approaches. Her meticulous laboratory investigations not only advanced clinical care but also provided some of the earliest evidence of antibiotic resistance, a concept that later became central to global public health and antimicrobial stewardship. In addition to her scientific achievements, Alexander played a crucial role in shaping pediatric education and research.
