In healthcare, infection control is essential to safeguarding patients and health care workers. Two critical infection control strategies are barrier nursing and reverse nursing, each focusing on preventing the transmission of infections but in different contexts. Barrier nursing involves implementing protective measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases from an infected patient to others, and reverse nursing, or reverse isolation, is focused on protecting vulnerable, immuno compromised patients from external infections. This review article aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of barrier nursing and reverse nursing, highlighting their significance, principles, implementation strategies, and roles in infection control within healthcare settings. The objective of this article is to define and differentiate between barrier nursing and reverse nursing, to explore the historical development and evolution of both practices, to explore the principles, protocols, and procedures associated with each approach, to identify challenges and best practices in the implementation of these nursing techniques, and highlight the role of healthcare professionals in ensuring adherence to infection control protocols. Barrier nursing and reverse nursing are foundational strategies in infection control, each serving distinct yet complementary roles in protecting patients and healthcare providers. By understanding their principles, applications, and challenges, healthcare professionals can enhance infection prevention efforts, reduce healthcare-associated infections, and promote safer clinical environments. This review underscores the critical importance of these practices in modern healthcare and highlights the need for ongoing training, adherence, and innovation in infection control protocols.
