Abstract
Hypothyroidism, an endocrine disorder resulting from insufficient production of thyroid hormones, is a significant health concern worldwide. Conventional treatments often rely on synthetic hormone replacemen therapy, which is effective but may have long-term side effects. In contrast, Ayurveda, a holistic and ancient system of medicine, emphasizes individualized care and natural remedies. The present review explores the Ayurvedic understanding of hypothyroidism, including its etiopathogenesis, diagnostic approach, and treatment strategies. It incorporates Ayurvedic Sutras (aphorisms) and traditional practices that focus on balancing the body’s doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), Agni (digestive fire), and overall wellness. Furthermore, this article evaluates Ayurvedic herbs, dietary modifications, and lifestyle changes that can support thyroid health and alleviate the symptoms of hypothyroidism. This review also examines the scientific evidence supporting Ayurvedic interventions and suggests potential areas for future research.
