I am Prof. Bhawna Lal Bhootra, an eminent and highly experienced Forensic Pathologist with a distinguished career spanning over five decades across South Africa, India, and other international jurisdictions. My academic foundation includes an MBBS from the University of Rajasthan and an MD in Forensic Medicine from Osmania University, India, complemented by top-tier South African qualifications, notably a Fellowship of the College of Forensic Pathologists (FC For Path (SA)) and a Fellowship of the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine (FFFLM) of the Royal College of Physicians, UK. I am dually registered as a specialist in South Africa and India, holding both South African nationality and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status, which underscores my broad global engagement in medicolegal practice and academia.
My professional journey has been marked by significant leadership and clinical roles, culminating in my current practice as an Independent Consultant Forensic Pathologist and Honorary Professor in Forensic Medicine in India. Previously, I served for many years as a Chief Specialist/Professor and Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine and Forensic Pathology Service at the University of Limpopo, South Africa, where I led service delivery, management, and extensive academic programs. My service delivery included performing complex medico-legal post-mortems, providing expert opinions on homicides, sexual assaults, and motor vehicle accidents, and advising the justice system. Administratively, I prepared business plans, managed budgets, and oversaw the development of forensic pathology services across the Limpopo Province.
A core focus of my career has been the advancement of Forensic Medicine through teaching, training, and research. I have been instrumental in training numerous medical students and post-graduate registrars, with five registrars successfully achieving their FC For Path specialist qualification under my guidance. I have also trained over 100 doctors in Forensic Medicine from South Africa and Uganda. As an active academic, I have served as an Examiner for specialist Fellowship and Diploma examinations with the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) and a reviewer for international journals. My scholarly contributions include 18 published articles in peer-reviewed journals on diverse topics, from unique injury cases to medicolegal systems in various countries, reflecting my depth of knowledge and commitment to the field.
