Abstract

Pyometra is a life-threatening uterine disorder commonly encountered in intact female dogs, particularly during the diestrus phase due to prolonged progesterone influence. The present case report describes the successful surgical management of pyometra in a 6-year-old Labrador Retriever. The animal was presented with a history of anorexia, lethargy, abdominal distension, and purulent vaginal discharge. Clinical examination and ultrasonography confirmed the diagnosis. Hematological evaluation revealed leukocytosis with neutrophilia and mild anemia. The case was managed successfully by ovariohysterectomy following stabilization with fluid therapy and antibiotics. Post-operative recovery was uneventful, and the animal showed complete clinical improvement within 10 days. Early diagnosis and prompt surgical intervention remain the most effective approach for managing pyometra in dogs (Smith, 2006; Hagman, 2018).
