Abstract

Cerebrospinal fluid examination is one of the most important investigation performed in the emergency department. It provides important diagnostic information but has a significant number of limitations also. Starting from the observation of color of CSF to latest invstigation like Polymerase Chain Reaction are useful in deciding the treatment. Properly interpreted tests can make cerebrospinal fluid a key tool in the diagnosis of a variety of diseases. Culture is the gold standard for determining the causative organism in meningitis.
