Introduction

I’m Dr. Swapan Kumar Kolay, a highly experienced academician and researcher specializing in Anthropology and Tribal Studies, currently serving as the Head of the School of Anthropology & Tribal Studies at Saheed Mahendra Karma Vishwavidyalaya, Jagdalpur. With a professional journey spanning decades, my expertise is deeply rooted in understanding the socio-cultural, health, and development issues of India's diverse tribal communities. My extensive project work, funded by prestigious national and international bodies like the ICMR, DST, DFID, and IIED, has focused on critical areas such as forest governance, community forestry, watershed conservation, and the applications of science and technology for rural livelihoods. I've also contributed significantly to institutional capacity building through my roles at organizations like Samarthan-Centre for Development Support.

As an academic leader, I've shouldered significant administrative and academic responsibilities, including serving as the Head of my school since 2010 and holding key positions like Chairman of the Board of Studies, Academic Council Member, and Chairman of the DRC. I have a robust research portfolio, marked by independent projects on the factors affecting declining tribal populations in Chhattisgarh, socio-economic impact assessments for industrial projects (like NMDC Steel Plant), and studies on ethno-medicinal plants. I am a dedicated mentor, having supervised numerous Master's dissertations and Ph.D. candidates, focusing on diverse tribal groups like the Muria, Bhatra, and Halba, and topics ranging from maternal health and nutrition to sickle cell anemia.

My commitment to anthropological discourse is evident in my substantial record of over 15 published books and more than 80 research papers in both international and national journals and edited volumes, exploring subjects like demographic transitions, gender inequality, ethno-medicine, and human biology. I’m an active participant and contributor to global academic forums, frequently presenting research and delivering invited lectures on tribal health, culture, and development challenges. My work is driven by a passion for applied research that directly informs policy and intervention, aimed at addressing the complex problems faced by indigenous and marginalized communities across India.
