I am Dr. Jai Prabhakar S.C., an accomplished Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the Centre for Multi-disciplinary Development Research (CMDR), an ICSSR Institute in Dharwad, India. With a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Mysore and over two decades of dedicated academic and research experience, I specialize in Bicultural Anthropology. My foundational work, including a highly-regarded M.Sc. in Anthropology (First Rank holder) and a doctoral dissertation on the Health and Nutritional Status among the Tribal Children of Mysore District, established my expertise in vital areas like Community Health and Nutrition and Medical Anthropology. Prior to joining CMDR, I served as a Resource Person at the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), contributing to national educational initiatives.
My research trajectory is distinguished by a strong focus on Development Anthropology and socio-cultural issues affecting marginalized communities in India. I have successfully led and contributed to numerous major research projects funded by prestigious bodies like the ICSSR and UNICEF, with a cumulative grant value of over ₹80 Lakhs. These projects delve into critical themes such as the occupational health of street children, the efficacy of affirmative action policies for Scheduled Castes' education, and the health status of various tribal groups in Karnataka. My scholarly output includes a published book and over 20 refereed journal articles and book chapters, reflecting my continuous engagement with national and international academic discourse.
I actively contribute to the global and local academic community through significant engagements. My international exposure includes presenting papers and convening a panel at major congresses in the USA (NAAAS), the UK (IUAES), Thailand, and Sri Lanka. Locally, I am deeply involved in academic governance, serving as a Doctoral Committee Member and a Board of Studies Member in Anthropology at various universities. I am committed to knowledge dissemination as evidenced by numerous invited lectures on research methodology and anthropological issues, and by guiding six Ph.D. scholars. My efforts were recognized in 2013 with the Honorary Mayor President award from the city of Baton Rouge, USA.
