Introduction: This paper presents a critical review of published literature detailing the cardinal signs, types, physiology, underlying causes and strategic management for addiction.

Background: Addiction refers to irrepressible urge which is often accompanied by loss of control. Certain behaviour unconsciously makes people addict to certain things. It’s a kind of psychological dependency that ruins many lives by affecting all the aspects of human life.

Methods: Following a literature search of electronic databases, 15 articles were retrieved that met the selection criteria with papers discussed in relation to cardinal signs, types, physiology, underlying causes and strategic management for addiction. 

Results: There is significant impact of addiction on physical, social, psychological and economic status for the addicts and their families as well as the society.

Conclusions: It is very essential to create awareness on addiction so that people abstain from such activities.

Nursing Implications: These findings will help the nursing professionals to identify the underlying causes of addiction, pathophysiology of addiction and impact of addiction on life, thus they can help the people by educating them.

Introduction: Dysthymia is a recurrent, prolonged depressive disorder, understudied, often undertreated and can lead to high rates of death by suicide. A descriptive survey was done to assess the prevalence and severity of Dysthymia among young adults living in selected residential areas of urban community of Delhi and to find out the relationship
between Dysthymia and selected demographic variables, that is, age, gender, marital status. 

Methodology: A quantitative research approach (non- experimental) with descriptive survey design was used. 200 young adults were administered Cornell Dysthymia Rating scale (CDRS).

Findings: Three fourth study subjects were found to have moderate dysthymia. 32 (16%) study subjects had mild dysthymia while 13 (6.5%) study subjects had severe dysthymia. Statistically significant relationship was found between dysthymia and age of the subjects.

Conclusion: Dysthymia should  be addressed through educational programs geared toward acknowledging and addressing dysthymia.

Schizophrenia is a major mental illness that not only adversely affects an individual, but also has an adverse impact on his or her family members and caregivers. Therefore, family members of clients with schizophrenia are placed in constant stress, due to never ending and ever growing problems. Family members of schizophrenic client calls for extra adjustment and coping to deal with the ongoing stress, hence this study was conducted to assess the level of stress and coping strategies among family members of clients with schizophrenia.

Methods: Descriptive survey approach was adapted to collect data, structured interview schedule was developed and 50 family members of clients with schizophrenia based on purposive sampling technique were interviewed at rehabilitation centres of Pune city.

Results: The findings showed that the overall stress score of respondents was 50.9 percent and the overall coping strategies score was found to be 23.8 percent. The highest stress score found in the dimension of social stress (73%) and the lowest in physical stress (17%). With respect to coping strategies, majority (51%) of respondents had used escape avoidance coping strategies and 6.7% used problem focused coping. Study reveals  that higher the level of stress lower the coping strategies (r = –0.344*, p < 0.05).

Interpretation and Conclusion: Family members of clients with schizophrenia suffer from moderate stress with few coping strategies. These results suggest that close monitoring of caregivers’ mental health and the  provision of psychoeducation, family intervention programmes and psychosocial support may reduce the stress among family members of patients with schizophrenia by adopting better coping strategies.

The postnatal period is a stressful transition period for new fathers.

Aim: The main objective of the study was to assess the psychological wellbeing of postnatal first-time father within 1 year after child birth from selected areas of Gandhinagar and to identify the association between the effect of psychological wellbeing and selected variables.

Method: A quantitative approach with descriptive study design was used and the samples consisted of 70 first time fathers of selected area of Gandhinagar. The convenient sampling technique was used. A structured questionnaire was used to assess the psychological wellbeing of postnatal first-time fathers and the tool was found reliable.

Result: The study shows that the majority of the fathers were in the age group of 21- 40 year and also, most of the fathers didn’t have any preparations. The study also showed that most of them (52.86%) had poor psychological wellbeing. Sleep appeared to deteriorate markedly followed by recreation, anxiety and despondent feeling and sexual relationships from pre-pregnancy levels among postnatal first-time fathers. There was significant association between ages of father, age of baby, type of family, economic status, mother’s working status, preparation of father, mode of delivery.

Conclusion: It shows that there were some factors that influence their psychological well-being and all postnatal first-time fathers were exposed to them in their partner’s pregnancy and after delivery. Fathers who had insufficient information about pregnancy and childbirth were also at risk of being distressed, suggesting that more attention needs to be paid to providing information to men about their partner’s pregnancy, childbirth and issues relating to caring for a new born infant.

Introduction: Nursing students directly or indirectly face many stressful situations which play an important role in the acquisition of professional abilities. This study aimed to identify the relationship between emotional regulation strategies and self–reported ego defence styles among nursing students at selected college of Hyderabad. 

Methods: Subjects of this study included 32 nursing students. Data was collected by using the Defence Style Questionnaire 40’’ (DSQ-40), and Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ).

Results: The findings showed that, there was positive significant correlation between ego defence mechanism and emotional regulation strategies.

Conclusion: Emotional regulation might be improved through utilizing adaptive defence styles in order to prepare nursing students to fulfil their experiences more effectively.
