Yoga has evolved from an ancient discipline of self-development and well-being into an increasingly studied approach to health promotion, disease prevention, and supportive healthcare. In recent decades, scientifi c research has explored the eff ects of yoga practices, including asana, pranayama, meditation, relaxation, and related techniques, on physical, physiological, psychological, and functional outcomes. This growing body of evidence provides an important opportunity to understand yoga not only as a traditional practice, but also as a potential component of contemporary health and disease management.
‘Yoga Therapy in Modern Medicine: Evidence-Based Clinical Applications for Health and Disease Management’ was written to bridge the gap between the traditional foundations of yoga, emerging scientifi c evidence, and their practical clinical applications. The book seeks to present yoga therapy in a systematic, accessible, and scientifi cally informed manner, while respecting the principles and philosophical foundations from which yoga originated.
The need for an evidence-based approach to yoga therapy is particularly important as the use of yoga continues to expand among patients, healthcare professionals, researchers, and the general population. While numerous studies have reported benefi cial eff ects of yoga, the quality, methodology, interventions, and outcomes of research vary considerably. Therefore, clinicians and practitioners need reliable scientifi c information to understand what has been studied, for whom it may be appropriate, what outcomes may be expected, and where the current evidence remains limited. This book emphasizes the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with contemporary scientifi c research.
The scope of this book encompasses the application of yoga therapy across a range of health conditions and clinical concerns. It brings together relevant concepts of yoga, therapeutic principles, physiological and psychological mechanisms, clinical applications, research evidence, safety considerations, and practical perspectives on integrating yoga into healthcare. Particular attention is given to the responsible use of yoga as a complementary approach, alongside appropriate medical assessment and conventional treatment where required.
The book is intended for yoga therapists, yoga teachers, researchers, healthcare professionals, students of yoga and health sciences, educators, and readers interested in the scientifi c and therapeutic dimensions of yoga. It may also serve as a useful reference for academic teaching, research, clinical discussions, and further exploration of evidence-based yoga interventions.
Ultimately, this book is an eff ort to encourage a balanced dialogue between the timeless wisdom of yoga and the standards of modern scientifi c inquiry. It is hoped that the knowledge presented here will contribute to more informed practice, responsible research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the wider understanding of yoga as a potential supportive component of holistic health and disease management.
