The landscape of musculoskeletal physiotherapy has transformed dramatically, demanding that practitioners seamlessly integrate traditional assessment skills into contemporary evidence-based approaches. This pocketbook emerges from the recognition that modern clinicians require a comprehensive yet accessible resource that bridges foundational principles with specialized practice demands. This guide represents a holistic approach to musculoskeletal assessment, encompassing not only regional anatomical evaluations but also the full spectrum of considerations that influence patient outcomes. From the philosophical foundations of functional assessment through specialized populations, including pediatric, geriatric, and amputee patients, this resource acknowledges the complexity of contemporary practice, while maintaining practical utility. The integration of pain neuroscience principles, biopsychosocial assessment frameworks, and movement analysis reflects the evolution of physiotherapy from a primarily biomedical model to a more nuanced understanding of human function.

Special attention is increasingly given to areas within the physiotherapist’s scope, including respiratory and cardiac considerations, neurological screening, and inpatient orthopedic care. Recognizing that effective clinical practice extends beyond assessment, this pocketbook incorporates essential assessment considerations, including physical modalities, ergonomic evaluation, balance assessment, and radiographic interpretation. The extensive appendices provide immediate access to clinical algorithms, decision trees, and reference values that support evidence-informed practices in diverse settings.

Whether you are a student building fundamental competencies, a new graduate navigating autonomous practice, or an experienced clinician seeking to enhance your assessment repertoire, this pocketbook serves as both a practical reference and a conceptual framework. It champions the physiotherapist’s role as a movement expert while emphasizing patient-centered care, clinical reasoning excellence, and the integration of the best available evidence with clinical expertise and patient values.
