Healthcare delivery systems worldwide face unprecedented challenges in meeting the diverse needs of their respective populations. India, with its population exceeding 1.4 billion and stark socioeconomic disparities, faces unique complexities in providing accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare to all citizens. The healthcare landscape has evolved significantly since independence; however, substantial gaps persist in infrastructure, human resources, financing, and equity.
This textbook, the National Healthcare Delivery System in India, emerges from the recognition that healthcare professionals, particularly physiotherapists, must understand the broader health system context in which they practice. The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) syllabus mandates comprehensive knowledge of healthcare delivery systems, acknowledging that clinical excellence alone is insufficient without understanding how systems function, how policies shape practice, and how professionals can contribute to improving the population’s health.
The book adopts a systematic approach to explore India’s healthcare ecosystem. Beginning with foundational concepts of health system organization and moving through detailed examinations of the public and private sectors, national programs, and policy frameworks, each chapter builds upon the previous one to create a comprehensive understanding of the subject. The content addresses contemporary challenges, including the dual disease burden, demographic transitions, healthcare financing constraints, and the imperative of universal health coverage.
Special emphasis was placed on the practical relevance for physiotherapy students and professionals. Case studies illustrate real-world applications, and discussions on health insurance, corporatization, and globalization prepare readers for the complexities of modern medical practice. The book explores how physiotherapists fit within the broader health workforce, their roles in addressing national health priorities, and the expectations society holds for rehabilitation professionals.
Distinguished contributors from across India have brought their expertise to the individual chapters, ensuring diverse perspectives and regional insights. Their collective experience in education, clinical practice, and health system research enriches the content with practical wisdom and theoretical knowledge. We aspire for this textbook to function as both a comprehensive reference and a catalyst for critical engagement with healthcare delivery in India. We hope this inspires readers to excel in their professional capacities and contribute significantly to the enhancement of India’s health system for the benefit of all.
