IntroductionI am Dr. Suprakash Chaudhury, a distinguished Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College, Pune, bringing over 48 years of medical experience since my MBBS in 1976 and over 31 years of dedicated teaching experience in the field of Psychiatry. My deep-rooted academic foundation includes an MD in Psychiatry (1986) and a Ph.D. in Psychology (1993) from Pune and Gauhati Universities, respectively. I am fluent in English, Hindi, and Bengali, with an understanding of Marathi, which has enabled me to connect effectively with diverse patient populations and academic communities across India. My professional journey began with a commission in the Army Medical Corps, providing me with extensive experience as a medical officer before dedicating my career to mental health and academia.
My career trajectory in psychiatry has been marked by significant contributions to clinical practice, education, and research across major institutions. I have served as the Professor and Head of Psychiatry in prestigious bodies like RINPAS, Ranchi (a 500-bed mental hospital and institute), Rural Medical College, Loni, and currently at Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College, Pune. This has involved not only treating a wide range of inpatient and outpatient psychiatric conditions but also the socio-vocational rehabilitation of patients. As a recognized Postgraduate examiner and Ph.D. Guide for multiple universities, I have been instrumental in shaping the next generation of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and nurses, with a total of 31 years of teaching experience under my belt.
My commitment to advancing mental health knowledge is evident in my extensive research portfolio and academic appointments. I have participated in numerous research projects sponsored by international and national organizations like the WHO, UNODC, ICMR, and the Armed Forces, with a focus on areas including epidemiology of mental disorders, drug abuse, and psychological effects of stress and trauma in soldiers. With over 800 publications in national and international journals, an H-index of 39, and having authored/edited 12 books and contributed multiple book chapters, my scholarly impact is substantial. I am also the President of the Association of Industrial Psychiatry of India and have served on the editorial boards of numerous high-impact journals, alongside receiving several esteemed awards for my professional excellence and research contributions, solidifying my position as a leading authority in the field of Psychiatry.
