Introduction

Subash Thapa is a Ph.D. student in Plant Science at South Dakota State University, United States, specializing in wheat breeding, plant pathology, and high-throughput phenotyping. His research integrates classical breeding approaches with cutting-edge technologies, including machine learning and image-based phenotyping, to enhance the genetic resistance of wheat against major diseases such as Fusarium Head Blight (FHB). With a strong foundation in genetics and genomics, Mr. Thapa has worked extensively on mapping quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for disease resistance and implementing deep learning-based tools like YOLO for automated detection of FHB symptoms in wheat spikes and kernels. His interdisciplinary work contributes to accelerating the selection of resistant lines and improving disease screening efficiency in breeding pipelines. Mr. Thapa actively collaborates with multi-institutional teams under the USDA-funded Wheat-CAP and USWBSI initiatives. His contributions extend beyond research, as he also participates in science communication, academic peer review, and professional societies such as the American Society of Agronomy and the Nepalese Agricultural Professionals of Americas (NAPA). He is passionate about fostering global collaboration in agricultural sciences, particularly in bridging the gap between field-level challenges and data-driven breeding solutions. His recent involvements include travel awards, leadership training workshops, and editorial reviews for early-career research publications in the field of plant breeding and disease phenotyping. Mr. Thapa’s academic journey and contributions reflect a commitment to enhancing crop resilience and sustainability in global agriculture. He looks forward to supporting the journal’s mission by contributing his expertise in phenomics, plant disease detection, breeding analytics, and interdisciplinary research review.
