I am Dr. Santosh Kumar Bishnoi, a Scientist with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and currently positioned at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT), Mexico. I hold an M.Sc. in Genetics and a Ph.D. in Genetics and Plant Breeding from CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, where my doctoral research focused on genetic diversity, heterosis and combining ability in faba bean. Since joining the prestigious Agricultural Research Service in 2009, I have gained extensive experience in plant genetic resources, crop improvement and pre-breeding, particularly during my tenure at ICAR-NBPGR, Ranchi and ICAR-Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research. My work spans exploration, evaluation, characterization and conservation of crop germplasm across diverse agro-ecological regions of India.
Over the years, I have effectively combined research, administration and teaching. I served as Officer In-charge of ICAR-NBPGR, Regional Station, Ranchi, and also contributed as a visiting professor at Guru Jambheshwar University of Science & Technology, Hisar. I have led and co-led several institutional and externally funded projects related to agricultural biodiversity, barley improvement and seed production. My scientific contributions include multiple germplasm exploration missions, extensive field characterization studies, development of core sets, and collaborative genomic research generating Illumina sequencing data for jackfruit and bael. I have published widely in national and international journals, contributed book chapters, guided Ph.D. research, and presented my work in numerous scientific forums. My research interests strongly align with wheat pre-breeding, germplasm utilization and the application of GIS and genomic tools for crop improvement.
I have been recognized with several awards, including the NAARM Institute Building Award and multiple best presentation awards. My professional engagement extends to serving on state-level technical committees, reviewing scientific manuscripts and actively participating in scientific societies. Through my work, I aim to contribute to strengthening food security by enhancing the conservation and utilization of plant genetic resources and developing resilient crop varieties. I remain committed to advancing agricultural research that benefits both farming communities and global crop improvement programmes.
