Introduction

I am Dr. Shilekh Mittal, Professor in the Department of Forensic Medicine at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot, Punjab. I hold an M.B.B.S. from MGM Medical College, Aurangabad; an M.D. in Forensic Medicine from Government Medical College, Amritsar; and a DNB in Forensic Medicine from the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi. Additionally, I have completed a Postgraduate Course in Health and Family Welfare Management from NIHFW, New Delhi, and an LLB (Academic) from Annamalai University, which has enhanced my understanding of medico-legal and ethical aspects of medical practice. With more than 20 years of post-graduate teaching experience, I have been actively involved in teaching, training, and guiding undergraduate and postgraduate students. My professional journey includes conducting over 9,500 medico-legal and post-mortem examinations covering a wide range of cases such as custodial deaths, medical negligence, homicides, suicides, and accidents. I have frequently served as an expert witness in court, contributing to the fair administration of justice. As Nodal Officer for Telemedicine at GGS Medical College since 2008, I was honored with an appreciation award from the Punjab Health System Corporation for my pioneering work in digital health services. I have also served as Medical Superintendent of GGS Medical College & Hospital, where I contributed to improving healthcare delivery and medico-legal infrastructure. My academic contributions include 66 research publications in reputed national and international journals, along with authorship of chapters in standard forensic medicine textbooks such as Modi’s Textbook of Medical Jurisprudence and Toxicology. I am an active member of various professional bodies and currently serve as the Finance Secretary of the Punjab Academy of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology. My professional philosophy is guided by integrity, scientific rigor, and dedication to advancing forensic medicine in India.
