James Francis Goodrich: Principal Dental Surgeon & Forensic Expert
My career is centered at the intersection of general practice dentistry, specialized forensic science, and continuous academic contribution. As the Owner and Principal Dental Surgeon at Gentle Dental Cambridge, I have maintained a continuous commitment to high-quality patient care in New Zealand since 2000, building upon a foundation of excellence established by graduating first in my class with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (with Distinction) from the University of Otago in 1996. My early experiences, including service as a Troop Officer in the Royal New Zealand Armoured Corps, instilled a discipline and preparedness that has been critical throughout my professional life. This blend of clinical mastery and dedication to service defines my approach to healthcare and leadership in the field.
A significant portion of my professional focus is dedicated to forensic odontology and Disaster Victim Identification (DVI). Since 1997, I have served as a Forensic Odontologist for the New Zealand Police and currently hold a ‘fully credentialed’ status in both General Scope and DVI. My expertise is formally recognized through numerous Fellowships, including the Faculty of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (RCPA) and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. I have been deployed to high-impact disaster events, including the Canterbury Earthquake, the Christchurch Mosque Shootings, and the Whakaari White Island Volcano incident, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to humanitarian and justice outcomes. Furthermore, my Certificate in Global Mental Health and Refugee Trauma from Harvard Medical School informs a trauma-aware approach in these critical deployments.
Beyond clinical practice and operational deployments, I am deeply engaged in shaping the future of forensic science and the profession. My leadership roles include serving as the current President of the New Zealand Society of Forensic Odontology (NZSFO) and contributing as an Associate Editor for the Egyptian Journal of Forensic Science and a reviewer for several international journals. I am actively involved in national and international standards-setting bodies, including the ISO Committee for dental terminology. My commitment to cultural competency is ongoing, evidenced by my current enrollment in the New Zealand Certificate in Tikanga Maori, which further strengthens my ability to serve the diverse communities of Aotearoa New Zealand.
