Post hemimandibulectomy prosthetic rehabilitation poses a challenge because of facial asymmetry, altered muscle function, deviation of the remaining mandible to the resected side, producing compromised esthetics and function. The treatment options in such scenario are surgical restoration, physiotherapy or prosthodontic intervention. The prosthetic management is challenging in order to develop occlusal scheme with compromised retention and stability. Prosthodontic treatment along with physiotherapy may be useful in reducing mandibular deviation and improving masticatory efficiency. A patient of hemimandibulectomy due to surgical resection of squamous cell carcinoma was treated with twin occlusion prosthesis with the objective of improving mastication and phonetics.

 Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is an endemic zoonoses affecting nervous system caused due to the ingestion of Taenia solium’s eggs. It is known to be the primary cause of preventable epilepsy which is treated with anti-epileptic drug (AED) therapy and most commonly phenytoin. With the chronic use of phenytoin comes its side effect of gingival overgrowth (GO) side by side. In this case report we have discussed the non-surgical management of the GO as the medical condition of the patient was a relative contraindication for surgical intervention with thorough phase I therapy and drug substitution with levatiracetam. The follow up after 3 months showed marked improvement in patient’s condition and encourages dental professionals to rely more and more on such a non-invasive treatment line, wherever feasible, in future.

Design: Descriptive research design was used to assess the association between knowledge and selected demographic variables such as age, gender and religion. Subjects: Parents of children age three to twelve years residing in lower Jollygrant, Dehradun, Uttarakhand.

Method: systematic random sampling technique was used to select the sample for the study.

Data analysis: The obtained data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation was used to assess the association between knowledge and socio demographic variables. The level of association was set at ≥ 0.005. Result: The result shows that 51% of mothers had a very good knowledge, 45% had good knowledge, 4% had fair knowledge.

Conclusion: The result shows that found that the knowledge of mothers regarding dental hygiene had been associated with income. So it is important to understand various factors that influence dental hygiene and encourage them to maintain dental hygiene of their children.

Background: Thalassemias are inherited blood disorder, widespread amongst Italian, Middle Eastern, Greek, South Asian and African children. It is classified into Alpha and Beta Thalassemias with a number of subtypes. β-thalassemia major is the most sever one. The objective of this study was to determine the association between β-thalassemia major and malocclusion among a sample of Sudanese children compared to healthy children.

Method: The present study was conducted for 54 children with β-thalassemia major aged (4-16) years old compared to 54 healthy control group matched with age and gender in Khartoum state, Sudan. Malocclusion was evaluated according to Angle’s classification. Statistical analysis was done using the statically package for social science (SPSS) version 20. The 95% confidence intervals for the association between variables were estimated and compared using Chi-square test. p value ≤ 0.05 was considered statically significant.

Results: β-thalassemia major exhibited various types of malocclusion; open bite (11.3%), increased overjet (37.7%), maxillary spacing (44.4%), maxillary crowding (16.7%), mandibular spacing (25.9%), and mandibular crowding (24.1%). Angle’s class I was the most frequent occlusal relation (80.0%) in children with β-thalassemia major, (20.0%) had class II occlusal relation, and no one had class III. No statically significant difference between the two study groups in relation to all types of malocclusion except for overjet (p≤0.004).

Conclusion: Various types of malocclusion were found in β-thalassemia major children in Sudan, increased overjet is the most frequent followed by anterior openbite. A significant correlation existed between β-thalassemia major and healthy control group. Perception of the situation of β-thalassemia children should contribute for the planning of dental services that can help in prevention of malocclusion and avoid future dental problems.

Aim: To assess the shaping ability of ProTaper rotary nickel-titanium instruments in simulated canals. 

Methodology: A total of 40 simulated root canals consisting of four different shapes in terms of angle and position of curvature were prepared using the 'crown down' approach recommended by the manufacturer. Pre-operative images of each canal were recorded using an image analysis package, the simulated canals were prepared and post-operative images were taken following preparation to sizes F1, F2 and F3. The pre and post-operative images were then superimposed on the original images. Development of canal aberrations and transportations as a result of preparation were assessed together with a variety of other parameters including width measurements at standard positions along the canal length.

Results: Overall two instruments fractured (F1, F3) and 2 deformed (F3). None of the canals became blocked with debris. Five danger zones were produced, 3 after F1 and 2 after F2 and F3. Three perforations occurred (F3), 1 shoulder (F3), 3 ledges (F3) and 1 outer widening (F3). There were highly significant differences (p<0.0001) between canal types for total width measurements at standard positions along the canal length. There were highly significant differences (P<0.0001) between the canal types for the amount of resin removed from the outer aspect of the curve at the beginning of the curve, halfway to the orifice and at the orifice. There were highly significant differences (P<0.0001) between the canal types for the amount of resin removed from the inner aspect of the curve at the beginning of the curve and at the orifice. Following the use of F3 instrument, transportation toward the inner aspect of the canal occurred in 25 (64%) specimens at the beginning of the curve; all canals with 40º curves transported to the inner. Overall, transportation was towards the outer aspect of the canal except at the beginning of the curve.

Conclusions: Under the conditions of this study ProTaper instruments produced few aberrations following use of the F1 and F2 instruments. Further preparation up to the F3 instrument tends to straighten the canal and produce more aberrations.
