The flourishing integration of periodontal and restorative dentistry for natural teeth requires sound knowledge and application of both mechanical and biological principles. While some restorative margins need to be placed at or below the margin of the free gingiva, this should be considered as a compromise and margins should not be placed more than 0.5 mm into a healthy gingival sulcus. Approximately 2 mm of healthy, sound supra-alveolar tooth surface is needed for attachment of the gingival tissues to the tooth. This dimension is called the biological width. In case adequate biological width does not exist, surgical or orthodontic procedures may be required to expose healthy tooth structure before final restorations are placed. This article explains the use of electrosurgery for the conservative crown lengthening of fractured tooth.

It is quite usual for a person to have a natural eye removed as a result of trauma, congenital abnormality or disease such as infection or a tumor. Eye is a vital organ, not only in terms of vision, but also being an important component of facial expression. The disfigurement associated with eye loss can cause significant physical and emotional disturbance. An artificial prosthesis is probably the only alternative in such cases to help rehabiltate such patient The present article is an illustration of a case report of a patient treated with custom-made ocular prosthesis of left eye using putty index as a guide for fabrication of the wax pattern.

Lobular capillary hemangiomas (LCH) are a group of vascular lesions characterized by capillary-sized vessels arranged in lobules caused due to external stimuli. Clinically, it is a localized granulation tissue overgrowth in reaction to mild irritation. This report presents a unique case of a male child with LCH on a rare site in the oral cavity and its surgical management.

Dentigerous cyst is the most prevalent type of odontogenic cyst and is associated with crown of an unerupted or developing tooth, and it accounts for more than 24% of cysts involving jaw. It usually develops around crown of mandibular third molar, maxillary canine, followed by mandibular premolars, but it rarely involves supernumerary teeth and central incisors. Dentigerous cyst is rarely associated with supernumerary tooth and mesiodens. The usual age of clinical presentation of dentigerous cyst due to supernumerary tooth is during the first four decades of life. The present case report describes about the dentigerous cyst involving the mesiodens and its surgical management in 11 year old child.

Tobacco use is the leading preventable causes of morbidity and mortality. The most powerful predictor of adult tobacco use is its initiation during adolescence, the most susceptible time for onset of this habit. Initiation of tobacco use is associated with peer pressure, parental use, school factors, cultural norms, lower self-esteem, accessibility, moderate pricing, desire for experimentation and aggressive marketing by tobacco companies. While dentists have a positive attitude regarding their role in tobacco cessation, the same is not extrapolated into practice. Several barriers to counseling in the dental clinic have been identified. Dental professionals can render tobacco cessation services to the youth. Brief interventions, self-help materials, and pharmacotherapy for established nicotine dependence form the mainstay of therapy. The purpose of this paper is to identify the several factors leading to tobacco initiation in adolescence and discuss the role of dentists in future dependence.

Indenatl treatemnt cases where there is a strong possibility of failure from non surgical treatment or failure has resulted from non surgical endodontic treatment or treatment is impossible or would not achieve a better result, or persistent presence of chronic inflammation at the root apex has hindered the better prognosis of the endodontic treatment , apicoectomy followed by retrograde filling is a well established procedure1 . Endodontic surgery usually consists of exposure of the involved apex, root resection, root end preparation and root-end filling. The ideal root-end filling material should be easy to manipulate, radiopaque, dimensionally stable, non-absorbable, and not affected by the presence of moisture or blood directly. It should also adhere to the preparation walls and seal the root canal system, be biocompatible, be non-toxic, well tolerated by the periapical tissues and promote healing[2]. Many materials have been suggested for root-end filling material including amalgam, reinforced zinc oxide eugenol, composite resin, gutta percha, zinc oxide eugenol, gold foil and glass ionomer cement. Dental amalgam is a successful material but not so popular, perhaps because of its marginal leakage and expansion on setting when used as a root-end material[3]. A new material, mineral trioxide aggregate, is found to be absolutely non cytotoxic whereas gallium alloy has displayed little cytotoxicity and ketac silver (a metal modified glass ionomer cement), super EBA and amalgam showed higher levels of toxicity, when used as root-end filling materials[4]. Hence, in this present study, we are going to evaluate the electrical and dye leakage tests of the most commonly used retrograde filling materials like mineral trioxide aggregate (Pro Root MTA-Dentsply), reinforced zinc oxide eugenol cement -super ethoxy benzoic acid cement (regular set, Harry Bosworth Co. Skokie,IL), and a metal modified glass ionomer cermet cement (Ketac Silver Applicap- 3M ESPE).

Background: Numerous studies have reported prevalence rates for work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) among dental professionals (DP).Objective: The objective of this paper is to update the dental professionals, physical therapists, occupational therapists, epidemiologists and ergonomics specialists with the growing evidence on WRMSD in DP through a systematic literature search. Materials and methods: Systematic review of studies in MEDLINE from 1972-2010 was conducted using search terms dental OR “dentist” work-related,” “musculoskeletal” in tittle abstract for English articles. Consensus was obtained after independent blinded search and overall findings were summarized. Main findings: Thirty-four included articles were heterogenous and studied all categories of DP which found one-year prevalence for MSK pain was from 24-100%. Neck and shoulder pain were the highest prevalent MSK symptom. Most of the reported symptoms were chronic and recurrent. Conclusion: There was an overall very high prevalence of MSK pain among DP. Among DP, dental hygienists and dental students were more affected with MSK symptoms. The risk factors highly predictive of developing MSK pain were biopsychosocial, And further research on prevalence in Indian dental professionals is warranted before implementation of preventive educational programmes among dentists.
