Genetics in Pediatric Dentistry has been written with the aim of providing a comprehensive understanding of the genetic basis of oral and craniofacial development, anomalies, and diseases in children. The book explores how advances in genetics have revolutionized the way we perceive dental health and disease. This volume brings together fundamental concepts of heredity, molecular biology, and genetic analysis with their direct clinical applications. It traces the evolution of genetics from Mendel’s experiments to the modern era of molecular diagnostics and genomic medicine. Each chapter has been designed to help the reader understand the mechanisms of inheritance, genetic mutations, and gene–environment interactions that influence dental and craniofacial development.
Special focus has been given to genetic conditions affecting tooth number, structure, and form; craniofacial syndromes; cleft lip and palate; and multifactorial diseases such as caries, periodontal disorders, and malocclusion. As pediatric dentists are often the first healthcare professionals to identify developmental deviations in children, an understanding of genetic principles is essential. This book aims to equip clinicians and postgraduate students with the knowledge needed to recognize, interpret, and manage genetically influenced conditions. It also highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and genetic counselling in providing holistic patient care.
In addition to classical genetic concepts, the book introduces readers to the recent advances in molecular genetics, including gene mapping, linkage studies, and the emerging applications of gene therapy and CRISPR technology in dental research. The integration of current evidence with clinical relevance makes this text a valuable resource for both academic and clinical settings. Through this work, the authors hope to inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and continued learning in the fascinating interface between genetics and pediatric dentistry, encouraging a deeper appreciation of how the smallest molecular variations can shape the future of dental health.
