The dynamic field of perioperative nursing has grown significantly alongside the rapid advances in surgical procedures, medical technology, and patient care standards. In modern healthcare, nurses are no longer just caregivers; they are critical thinkers, coordinators, advocates, and integral members of the surgical team. This book, From Setup to Closure: Nursing Responsibility, is an effort to comprehensively document and guide the practical responsibilities of nurses within the operating theatre (OT) environment.
From the preparation of sterile fields to the final stages of surgical closure and documentation, the responsibilities borne by OT nurses demand precision, vigilance, and professionalism. As surgical procedures become increasingly complex, the need for structured protocols, instrument handling skills, and realtime decision-making becomes even more vital. This book provides a structured and detailed account of the essential instruments, articles, procedures, and nursing roles across different surgical specialties. Written with the intention of serving as both an academic text and a clinical reference, this book aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice. It highlights every phase of surgical nursing: pre-operative setup, intra-operative roles (scrub and circulating nurse responsibilities), aseptic protocols, instrument and suture management, and post-operative handover. Each chapter integrates practical checklists, evidence-based practices, and institutional protocols to support safe and effective nursing care.
A core focus of this book is professional accountability. In today’s healthcare environment, nurses must not only follow technical procedures but also navigate ethical obligations, documentation standards, and legal responsibilities. Whether it’s participating in surgical counts, managing surgical specimens, maintaining infection control, or responding during emergencies, nurses must act with clarity, confidence, and clinical competence.
This book is a product of extensive clinical experience and educational insight. It is designed to benefit undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students, perioperative educators, and practicing OT nurses. By outlining nursing responsibilities from setup to closure, it aims to instill a sense of professional pride, ethical discipline, and clinical excellence in every reader. We hope this work serves as a trusted guide and inspires nursing professionals to uphold the highest standards of care in the operation theatre and beyond.
