AbstractHealth care has changed dramatically by the marriage of computers and telecommunications. Implications for hospitals and physicians already have received extensive media attention, but comparatively little has been said about the impact of information technology on dentistry. Teledentistry is a newly emerging area of dentistry that uses dental health records, telecommunication technology, digital imaging and the internet to link dental health care providers in rural or remote communications with specialists in larger communities to enhance communication, the exchange of health related information and access to dental care for underserved patients. This would increase accessibility of specialists, besides decreasing time and cost associated with specialty consultations.
